New all-time record: Bilbao Airport closed 2023 with over 6.3 million passengers and 51,448 flights

Bilbao Airport has reached its all-time passenger record, surpassing by far the 6 million passenger mark. Specifically, in 2023, 6,336,441 passengers used the Biscayan infrastructure. A milestone that has also occurred in the year that marks the 75th anniversary of the airport infrastructure, which opened to air traffic in 1948. This figure represents 23.5% more than that of the whole of 2022. The Chairman and CEO of Aena, Maurici Lucena, stressed that “these record figures in air transport are fundamental for the economic and social development of Spain. We should all congratulate ourselves for them. Also the airlines that, like Aena, suffered the harsh consequences of the pandemic, and are now carrying more passengers than ever”.

As for the type of travel at Bilbao Airport, both domestic and international trips have shown considerable growth. Thus, the number of domestic passengers grew by 14.5%, up to 3,786,635 passengers. The same is true of international passengers, which increased by 40.1% in 2023, reaching a figure of 2,538,088 passengers. These figures are possible thanks to an upward trend in air operations, with 51,448 landing and take-off movements, 14.5% more than the previous year.

Data for the month of December
As for the monthly figures, Bilbao Airport registered 470,615 passengers last month, which makes it the best month of December in the history of the infrastructure, with 18.9% more passengers than in the same month in 2022. As for the type of traffic, domestic traffic grew by 11.1% compared to December 2022, to 288,809 passengers. International passengers increased by 33.9%, with a total volume of 180,928.
