Local institutions have been calling for years for the expansion of Bilbao airport in view of the continuous increase in passengers. AENA has officially confirmed that it will expand the Bilbao terminal in the coming years and that it is already working on its “functional design”. This has been done by the president of the company that manages the State airports, Maurici Lucena, during its shareholders’ meeting.

Last year, Bilbao beat its operations record, with more than 6.3 million passengers and 51,000 flights. The expansion work is part of AENA’s next strategic plan to be implemented between 2027 and 2031. There is no date for the works, but they will be carried out in that period. The Loiu project is currently in the functional design phase, prior to the tendering process. In other words, AENA’s technical services are taking into account all the needs that the Bilbao Airport terminal will require in order to provide an adequate service in the future.
